Canvas Conversations with Duet Design Studio

Canvas Conversations with Duet Design Studio

Duet Design Studio is a Richmond, Virginia based, full-service interior design firm experienced in interior renovations, new build construction, as well as simple room refreshes.

Duet Design Studio's style mixes old with new, integrating textures and color, layered with pieces that feel travelled and have history. An intrinsic love of vintage furniture and materials that feature raw and natural textures balance appreciation of color and pattern, creating spaces that feel practical and effortless.

We asked Lindsey Frank and Shanda Humphrey, of Duet Design Studio, five questions to learn more about their practice, habits, dreams, and interior design tips & tricks. Read more below:

Q: Describe your style in three words.
A: Casual, collected, and refined.

Q:  What are your must-have design elements in every space?
A: Thoughtful, custom details are a must-whether it’s bespoke cabinetry, tailored upholstery, or layered window treatments. We’re incredibly inspired by 1920s French Art Deco, and that influence often shows up in subtle, unexpected ways. We also love incorporating handmade pieces and unique lighting that feels like jewelry for the home. And plants! Always plants. They’re the perfect finishing touch to bring warmth and life into a space, making it feel truly lived-in and loved.

Q: Which trends do you think will always be in style?
A: We don’t tend to follow trends too closely. We believe that surrounding yourself with pieces you love—and creating a space that feels personal and authentic—will always be timeless. Design should reflect the people who live in the home, not just what’s popular at the moment.

Q: What is your favorite part of the design process?
A: We love the early phases of problem-solving—figuring out more functional floor plans and designing custom millwork. There’s something really rewarding about reimagining how a space can work better, and then layering in the details that make it feel intentional and beautiful.

Q: What was the last book you read or podcast you listened to?
A: Lindsey: I need to make more time to read, but I always listen to the Business of Home podcast on my commute - keeps me connected to what’s happening in the industry. Now that I think of it, I just received Interiors of a Storyteller by Stephanie Sabbe in the mail, and I’m determined to carve out time to actually sit down and read it!

A: Shanda: I’m a fan of the Interior Collective podcast—it’s fun, fresh, and covers such a great mix of design perspectives. It’s always inspiring to hear the different journeys designers have taken to get where they are today.
