Designer Spotlight: Anne Pulliam Interiors
Anne Pulliam Interiors creates rooms that do not look "designed" but look like happy homes that have evolved over time with a layered patina of both new and found objects. Her ability to mix textures, time periods and colors creates individual spaces that are both fresh and restful. After over a year of cocooning many of us are tired of our houses or in the midst of trying to make them better. I thought I would ask my dear friend Anne Pulliam about life, her Memorial Day plans, design and what is her number one way to freshen up a tired room.
How are you celebrating Memorial Day this year?
I'm spending the weekend with friends in the mountains of Virginia. We are planning on visiting vineyards, swimming and catching up over good food and even better wine!

What are your must haves for celebrating holidays - whether it's at the table or home décor?
Flowers, good food and always something kind of cheeky that my friends and guests can wear that keeps things fun and not too serious.
What are you most looking forward to for Memorial Day this year?
Spending time with dear friends, our babies and dogs.
How did you get into Interior Design?
Ever since I can remember I’ve been rearranging rooms for family and friends and fascinated with beautiful spaces. In college I majored in business and worked in marketing for nonprofits. I knew that this wasn’t the path for me and started talking to women in the design world to see how I could transition and get my feet wet! My friend and fellow designer/ tastemaker Anna Matthews introduced me to my future boss and mentor Erica Burns with Erica Burns Interiors and we hit it off! She took a chance on me and I started as her assistant and worked my way to being an assistant designer before started my own firm in early 2020.

What is your favorite part about being a designer?
Seeing a room come together in person after you’ve envisioned and dreamed about it in your head for many months!
How would you describe your style in one sentence?
My style is colorful, layered and functional.

What is your best entertaining tip?
Prep ahead of time and always set the mood with good lighting and fresh flowers.

What are you best known for personally or professionally?
Color.
What color are you constantly gravitating toward?
It changes… but right now I’m really into plumb!

Antiques and personal items that make a house feel like a home… layered and lived in!
How do you start the design process for a room?
I always start with the floor plan. Then build out the design, color scheme and furniture selections based on my clients preferences re: style, color and room purpose.

What’s your favorite design trend (current or timeless)?
Mixing old with new. I love the tension between the two and how it can instantly add sophistication and soul to any space.
How do you feel art can influence a room or space that you are designing?
I think it’s just as important as the paint color or wall treatment in a room. Honestly it can make or break a room in my opinion. It can add the perfect contrast and compliment all in the same space.
